Retainers are essential to keep your teeth in their new positions after braces. They prevent teeth from shifting back and help the jawbone stabilize.

Initially, you should wear your retainer all day and night, removing it only for eating, drinking, and cleaning. Over time, most people can switch to wearing it only at night.

    • There are several types of retainers:
      • Hawley Retainers: Made of metal and acrylic, these are durable and adjustable.
      • Clear Retainers: Made of clear plastic, they are less visible but can wear out faster.
      • Fixed Retainers: These are bonded to the back of your teeth and are permanent

Clean removable retainers daily with a soft toothbrush and water. Avoid hot water, which can distort the shape. For fixed retainers, brush and floss carefully around the wire.

It is recommended to remove removable retainers while eating to prevent damage. For fixed retainers, avoid hard or sticky foods that could dislodge the wire.

If your retainer feels tight or uncomfortable, it may mean your teeth have shifted. Contact your orthodontist to adjust or replace the retainer.

Retainers are often needed for life. Initially, you may wear them full-time, then transition to nighttime use as directed by your orthodontist.

Contact your orthodontist immediately to get a replacement. Avoid delays to prevent your teeth from shifting.
